![]() ![]() Milano is definitely a city you should bypass! In general, it is not a beautiful city with not much to see unless you enjoy high end shopping because beyond that all they have here are the regular chain stores you see throughout the rest of the world. I wish I had chosen another city in Italy because I was very disappointed in everything I saw. Having stayed here for 4 months it really is a city "out of control" where no one seems to care about anything and laws are not enforced. People ramming into you all the time, everywhere, and no one says "Sorry" or "Excuse me". It's a very fast paced city where taking a stroll is impossible. No timers on their street lights so you don't know how much time you have when not to or when to cross the street. You see them on numerous streets and most have dogs with them that lay on sidewalks the entire day. Water in this city has a lot of chemicals and leaves residue on pots, pans, sinks, etc. As if this isn't enough there are a lot of smokers. If you suffer from allergies, Milano is not a city to visit due to its high level of pollution from industry and cars. I think to myself how there's nothing luckier than this: to ride out of a train station and right into the middle of a big city I've never been to before late on a warm summer night. We ride right through the station and out into the big moonlit piazza out front. and I hop on our bikes and ride down the platform, pedaling under the glazed vaults and marble arches. All I know is that it's late, and the station is empty, so S. In the early 1940's, it was also one of the train stations from which Jewish detainees were sent off to the death camps.īut on the night we arrive, I don't know any of this. Later on, I learn that this swanky station wasn't built during a fortunate moment at all, but during an unfortunate moment when Mussolini was in power and Milano Centrale was just another monument to his monumental ego. Our train was a real beater, and it looks out of place in this station like some beach bum in flip-flops and cutoffs who wandered into the swankiest restaurant in town. ![]() says, giving the broken down local train we just got off of one last look. "This place is way too nice for that train," S. The station is a vast, elegant hall built during some fortunate moment when a train station was like a city's front parlor a marble-covered showplace designed to impress the visitors. It's late by the time we roll into Milano Centrale. Then they crank up an opera cd full blast, and spend the rest of the trip singing along to Pavarotti at the top of their lungs. ![]() They wish us a buona sera and close the door to the engineer's compartment. of the cockpit because his buddy shows up. The one with lots of passengers on board.Īt Arezzo, there's a crew change. He starts chatting her up, pointing out all the gizmos on the control panel and making jokes while occasionally turning his attention to the secondary business of driving the train. At some point, the engineer props open the door and notices us. A little door separates the engineer's compartment from where we're sitting. The local from Camucia has a space where we can stash our bicycles at the very front of the train. ![]()
